Counting down the days & we can now announce our headline act for Summer Soulstice 2017… Take a bow, Mr. Shaun Escoffery!

The name Escoffery is a famous one in UK black music: The EscofferysMichelle Escoffery (a cousin), & of course Shaun. It was actor Idris Elba who convinced him that his future career lay in singing & acting. Best friends in their teens, they both attended Barking & Dagenham College together, Idris studying performing arts, Shaun enrolling in an architectural course. But his friend soon convinced Shaun that he should give it up & do what he really wanted to do & join him on the performing arts course.

It wasn’t long before Shaun made his first impact singing on ‘Got To Find Me A Love’ with D’Influence in the early ’90s at the age of 17, having been writing songs since an early age & inspired by the music collection of his father, who was a DJ at dancehall & blues clubs. “He introduced me to Gregory Isaacs, Dennis Brown, Donny Hathaway, Marvin Gaye..” says Shaun. And his musical heritage doesn’t stop there as his mother was also in a lovers rock group alongside her cousin.

Shaun later gained success in musical theatre roles, starring in West End shows including ‘Les Miserables’, ‘Smokey Joe’s Cafe’ & a now six-year run as Mufasa in the Tim Rice-Elton John hit show ‘The Lion King’. During this time Shaun has also performed with the esteemed likes of Chaka Khan, Stevie Wonder & the late, great Prince.

His solo recording career kicked off in 2001 with the now classic nu-soul cuts such as ‘Space Rider’ & ‘Days Like This’, the latter of which got the famed DJ Spinna remix treatment & is a clubland anthem at many events including our very own. Subsequent releases from Shaun include the albums ‘Move Into Soul’ (2007), ‘The Red Room’ (2014) & ‘Evergreen’ (2016).

Currently signed to the mighty independent soul/jazz label Dome, recent singles such as ‘Nature’s Call’, ‘People‘, ‘Perfect Love Affair‘, & ‘When The Love Has Gone’, have all received A-list rotation from BBC Radio 2. Shaun played a short UK tour in the autumn of 2016, selling out the prestigious Union Chapel in London. In 2017 he already has more airplay success with his current single ‘Healing Me’ & will be a key part of Radio 2 at the Cheltenham Jazz Festival as well as joining us on the Main Stage at Barnet’s very own Summer Soulstice, in aid of Cherry Lodge Cancer Care.
