Soultax

An energetic ensemble of London based musicians known as Soultax, offered Summer Soulstice 2008 some fun lovin’ and lively interpretations of great soul classics of the 1960’s and 1970’s!…

Formed in 1989 by Steve Broughton, drummer with the Edgar Broughton Band, the band has had well over 60 musicians pass through their ranks over the years.

They played a tough brand of Stax and Atlantic soul gems and the band performed all over the UK, as well as touring in countries like Germany.

Having built a formidable following across North London over the years, they guaranteed a foot stomping, hand clapping set which got everyone on their feet. Soultax were once described as a ‘locomotive possessed’ and at our second Summer Soulstice that soul train just kept on running!

At one time they were an enormous 26 piece line-up, but they were just that bit smaller at around 16 members on our main stage and featured lead vocalists Sally Broughton, Rambling Mad and Shemi Ugboma. The band still has a healthy fanbase and were gigging regularly up until 2016.

Sadly in May 2022, Steve, who also played drums on Mike Oldfield‘s classic ‘Tubular Bells’ album, passed away at the age of 72. Rest in peace maestro.
