Ash Selector

DJ, promoter, presenter, producer, remixer and an all round good guy, Ash supported Summer Soulstice from day one…

A good friend of Andy Weekes, Ash’s own DJ exploits began back in 1980, playing soul, jazz funk, Brit funk and lovers rock at many a student party.

He soon got his first residency: Soul Night at Melanies in north west London and when the club changed the sound system, they sold the old one to Ash who immediately set up the Rhythm Box Soul Sound hiring venues, playing and promoting his own events. He also had his first taste of playing at Notting Hill Carnival with the Peoples Choice International sound system.

Ash continued to play on the club scene and started presenting radio shows on stations like Girls FM and Skyline. He also gigged at clubs in the Midlands like Boogies, Bobby Browns and Edwards No.8 (Birmingham), Christophers (Kingswingford) and Alley Cats (Stourbridge). He was resident in the soul and soulful house room at Kiss FM‘s 3rd Base every Saturday night at Shaftesburys alongside DJs Chrissie T, Max & Dave, Steve Jackson, Chris Phillips and the legendary Paul ‘Trouble’ Anderson.

Ash was also a regular at London’s Wag ClubIceni, Limelight and The Middx & Herts Country Club with the likes of Norman Jay, Dr. Bob Jones, Jasper the Vinyl Junkie, Kev Hill and Tony Monson.

In 1994 Ash met Choice FM‘s Steve Wren and was invited by Steve to join him on his Saturday night Clubtime show, playing various comical characters and supplying sound fx. The pair played together at Slam (Camden) and Ash MC’d for Steve at Weekenders like Caister and Southport. They also doubled up on various club nights and the Launch Party for RnB act N-TYCE with US break dance troupe Rocksteady Crew.

In 1997 Ash launched a new club night playing soul classics alongside upfront R&B and soulful house/garage all in one club room. He located a club called Flamingoes in Hanover Square, London and invited Steve to co-promote/DJ with him. Called Shaft, it was launched in September that year and by April 2000 it had been voted No.2 UK Club Night by Blues & Soul magazine with many guest DJ’s playing including Greg Edwards, Kwame (D’Influence) and Caister legends Chris Hill, Froggy and Gary Dennis.

Ash also joined In House Recordings releasing 5 singles and producing UKG remixes including a cover of Positive Force’s ‘We Got The Funk’. He teamed up with the Soul City Movement in 1998 touring Malta with Lemar & Kele Le Roc and around the same time, located a club in London’s West End called the Soul Cafe, starting a new night; the legendary Soul Shack with James Anthony. Over 20 years later it is still running as a successful event on the third Saturday of every month.

Over the years Ash’s hard working schedule has seen him DJ alongside legendary acts including Atmosfear, Beggar & Co, Fatback Band, Marlena Shaw, Eddie Henderson, Leroy Burgess, Don Blackman, Junior Giscombe, Omar, Ce Ce Peniston, Brass Construction, GQ, Soul II Soul, Odyssey, Gwen McCrae, the list goes on. He’s playedSolar Radio boat parties, Luxury Soul Weekenders, award winning Salou Soul Weekenders (which he also co-promotes), the Soul Experience with Georgie B (Second Image) and all over Europe and the Caribbean.

A mainstay of Summer Soulstice every year, you can also catch Ash Selector presenting Groove Control every Saturday 12-2pm (GMT) and Never Too Much on Tuesdays 3-6pm (GMT) via Solar Radio.
